To say that Joel has been a lifesaver to me would be the understatement of the century. Joel Singer has been one of the most helpful, resourceful, and inspirational teachers I have had. There are not enough adjectives in the dictionary to describe what Joel has meant to me.
I met him at a crossroads in my life in which I was contemplating giving up education as my chosen career and looking for something else. There were no jobs for a social studies teacher and I was woefully underqualified. Joel himself is a former teacher with many years of experience in the field so it seemed like a natural fit for us to work together. I first began working with him on polishing up my resume and cover letter to look more professional and adhere to what recruiters wanted to see. One of the most important aspects of the first days with working with Joel were the mock interviews that we did together. What I learned from these were that you can only prepare so much for these and interviewers will ask you questions that will surprise you and catch you off guard.
After several weeks working together and applying for entry level positions at schools, I bagged several interviews as a paraprofessional. My weeks of practicing with Joel really paid off and I was offered my first entry level position as a paraprofessional. This not only gave me a sense of relief but joy that Joel was able to give me the confidence to achieve something I have long sought after. After this, I was inseparable from Joel.
Throughout my time with Joel, we kept in regular contact texting him whenever I felt that I needed his assistance. This was of great help to me as I would give him updates as to how I was approaching my job on a day-to-day basis and he would give me ways to improve. Joel always gave me advice even when it was difficult for me to hear.
I think one of the most important aspects of working with Joel was how he got me into the mindset of preparing myself every day to accomplish what I needed to do to get done for the week. In our weekly or bi-weekly discussions, we would talk about things I was finding difficult to accomplish. At the end of the conversation, he would email me a list of certain tasks to get done by week’s end. This has now manifested itself in me making lists of tasks that I need to accomplish, and it has made my life so much easier to manage.
As I write this letter, I am currently working as a full-time social studies teacher in Fairfield County. Joel’s consistent faith in me and my abilities has gotten me the job of my dreams. If it was not for Joel, I would have given up and tried my hand at another career. Joel has changed my life for the better and I know that he will help your son or daughter with improving their lives and self-esteem.
